In the collective unconscious of modern society, many people would think that a boy would first choose to travel and ride a bicycle rather than have a permanent job in the same company for more than 30 years, and even more would expect that boys from a country with The best educational system in the world chose stability over passion, but it is not like that and in this case we will see the story of Matias Aura from Finland.
1 - How was your life before bmx?
My life before bmx.. Well, I was 13 years old, I was doing stuff my friends were doing, skateboarding, jumping on trampolines, playing soccer etc. Extreme stuff mainly, but some other sports too. Once I found BMX and started learning tricks, I knew this is it.
2- what were your dreams as a child?
I always looked up to many types of riders back in the day, this was in 2005-2006 when I started to jump with a mountain bike in the woods. I loved to watch BMX back then, even tho I was riding a big bike only. My favourite TV shows on extreme sports channel was The Props Road fools! I got most inspired by Mike Aitken and Chase Hawk, even tho I liked watching the gnarliest tricks go down on the Dew tour as well. I was thinking back then: I wanna ride as smooth as Mike and Chase!
3-What was your main motivation to risk bmx to the fullest?
Just to get forward, not to be stuck in the same things/tricks at the skatepark. I wanted learn and grow as rider!r
4-in the darkest moments of your life than bmx, what role did you play and why did you cling to bmx?
Bmx was something I always enjoyed to do, even tho I had some difficulties in my personal life.
5- how is your life when you are not riding a bike?
I've been through two knee injuries during the past 3 years, I've been off the bike totally for 1,5 years during that time.
It felt horrible of course, it felt like you lose your personality. But on the positive side of things, I spent that time educating myself.
6-many know your life as a rider but few know what it cost you to get there, so what were your biggest challenges to become a person who focuses his life on this beautiful lifestyle?
In Finland, many people appreciate if you have a good education and a job. That was propably the hardest part about focusing on riding, when almost all of my friends were educating themselves and working on decent jobs already in their early 20's. I was just doing my thing on the bike and suddenly realized through BMX, what I want to work with beside of BMX. During my injuries, I studied to become an youth instructor. I always loved to see the kids/youth happy/stoked and it made my day if I could do that to someone. Now I can do that every day in and outside of BMX.
7- to this day, what challenges have you experienced and how has bmx helped you overcome them
My knee injuries have propably being the hardest. During my rehab I had this feeling inside, that I want to be flying in the air with my bike again
8- if you could talk with your past self, with the 5-year-old boy, with the 7-year-old boy, what would you say to him?
Just keep doing you and keep riding that bike! Maybe switch a normal kids bike to a BMX a bit earlier haha
9- There are many boys out there who suffer from depression, strong addictions to drugs and live very badly, many boys who have not tried BMX out of fear, what message would
Just try a bike and be open minded about it. LEAVE from stupid friends who are not doing good to you. You will find better friends from BMX, I PROMISE.
Hardest part of living in Finland and ride BMX is the long, dark and cold winter! We have only a few good indoors, And you have to drive there by car for at least 2 hours/way.
We used to take a winter escape trip to Spain, Malaga. Escaping the Finnish winter to ride The Ruben bowl and other good pools and tranny in Spain. That's the best after being stuck in the dark cold winter for a few months straight! These trips with friends means a world to me. Good people, good times. No hurry, just BMX and chills.
What message would you give to the world so that it never gives up and never stops dreaming?
Just keep doing what you love, time will take you to your dreams!
